A duplex was severely damaged in a fire at the unit block of South Surrey Avenue Wednesday morning, firefighters say.
According to Ventnor Fire Chief John Hezlett, firefighters responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames showing from rear of building.
The fire started in first floor unit which was occupied at the time. Officials say everyone made it out, while one occupant was treated on scene for minor burns. Residents of the top floor unit were not home at the time.
Both units sustained severe smoke and water damage. Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 25 minutes.
The Red Cross has placed the first floor occupants. Ventnor and Margate were the two companies responding to the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though it is not believed to be suspicious at this time.
