A group of Derreck Mack's family members gathers outside Mayor Lorenzo Langford's home Thursday night
ATLANTIC CITY -
One day after a group of concerned residents and family
members gathered outside his house, Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford issued
a statement on the fatal police involved shooting Friday.
The group, including 18 year-old Derreck Mack's mother, gathered Thursday night and
demanded an apology on behalf of the city for the shooting. Mayor Langford did not apologize, saying the investigation
is ongoing.
In his statement Friday, Langford said his thoughts and
prayers are with the families of all parties involved, and said he is sorry the
incident occurred. He reiterated that the investigation into the shooting is
ongoing.
The mayor also said he is concerned for growing tensions
between the community and the police department, fueled by what he called
"self appointed activists." Mayor Langford added that he prays for healing for the city,
and that the truth will "reign supreme."
