Elderly become targets of thieves in Vineland

VINELAND -

Police in Vineland warn that a group of burglars may be targeting the elderly.

An 80 year-old woman in Vineland, who chose not to be identified because she is too afraid, was the latest victim Sunday morning.  She says two men broke into her home through the back door, came into her bedroom and smothered her with a pillow so she couldn't see their faces.  The men demanded money, and then stole more than a thousand dollars in cash, and all her jewelry.

Police say there have been two similar break ins in the same area in the past month.

"We believe there's a couple individuals going around now, looking for elderly folks," said Detective Sergeant Paul Shadinger.

In the previous two break-ins, police say no one was home.  Detective Sergeant Shadinger added that the men may have thought the elderly woman was at church when they broke in.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Vineland Police.  Crimestoppers of Vineland is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to their arrest and conviction.
