What started as a Middle Township resident searching for buried treasure ended with a visit from the bomb squad.
A piece of ordnance was found on the front lawn of a house on Delsea Drive.
Property owner Karl Novsak was using a metal detector on the front lawn when he stumbled upon a shell buried several inches underground around 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
Middle Township Police and a bomb squad responded to the scene and shut down a stretch of Delsea Drive.
Novsak partially dug up the ordnance before realizing what he had found.
"Seemed like it was a piece of four inch steel pipe. Dug out some more and it kind of went to a point at one end and as I cleaned off the dirt and I realized it wasn't a pipe but a piece of ordnance," said Novsak.
Novsak says he does not believe the ammunition was live and it was removed by authorities without incident with the all clear being given just before five Saturday evening.
