Richard Stockton (1-0) opened the 2012-13 season in a big way as they defeated Kean University (1-2) 76-48, ending a 13-game losing streak to the Cougars dating back to the 2005-06 season. Four Ospreys scored in double figures as Stockton was never threatened during the rout.
Stockton jumped out to a 33-20 lead at the break on the strength of 11 first-half points by Che'Na Thompson (Salem/Salem). Alexa Ryan (Hazlet/Raritan) chipped in with seven of her team-high 10 rebounds in the first half of her first game in a Stockton uniform. The Ospreys forced 14 turnovers and held the Cougars to just 9-32 (28.1%) shooting during the first 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, it was all Stockton as they stretched the lead by outscoring Kean by 11-4 early. After the Cougars cut the margin to 50-33, the Ospreys ran out on another 14-3 spurt and cruised to the victory. Stockton shot 14-27 (51.9%) from the field during the second half, including 4-5 from behind the arc.
Thompson led Stockton with 20 points while point guard Sarah Gibbs (Ocean View/Ocean City) totaled a career-high 10 assists and tied her career high with 13 points for a double-double. Sophomore Alex Nardoza (Woodbridge/Woodbridge) also set a new career high with 13 points while fellow soph Kelsey Brown (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) added 12 markers and blocked a game-high four shots.
AnnaRose Pierre, the only Cougar in double figures, led all scorers with 30 a game-high points and grabbed 15 rebounds to complete a double-double. Teammate Kyanne Sager pulled down 14 boards as Kean outrebounded the Ospreys by a 54-43 margin
Stockton will have eight days off before traveling to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday November 28 for a 6 pm showdown. Kean also will have a long stretch of time off before playing at Ramapo on November 28 at 5:30 pm.
