LONGPORT -

Both residents and non-residents of Longport teamed with a local radio station today to help clear the beach of debris left by Hurricane Sandy.

Over 100 volunteers partnered with 95.1 WAYV to sweep the beach free of trash and debris that may have washed ashore during the storm.

Mayor of Longport Nick Russo was on hand to participate and thank the members of the community for their hard work.

"To me it was very, very symbolic because after Sandy, people we're concentrated on their homes and right now we have people concentrating back on their lives and back on the environment," said Mayor Russo.

In total volunteers collected 200 trash bags full of debris and garbage.

Event organizers hope the beach cleanup will become an annual event.
