MARGATE -

Local landmarks in south Jersey are being cleaned up in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

In Margate, Lucy the Elephant escaped the storm with minimal damage, but the park where she stands was filled with debris. Volunteers organized on Facebook, and began cleaning up the grounds at Lucy Monday in to help the monument re-open as soon as possible.

"She's weathered everything mother nature has thrown at her for 131 years and by the grace of God, she survived this one too. Lucy stands as a testament to what's important," said Richard Helfant, Executive Director of Lucy the Elephant.

Lucy is expected to reopen to the public on Saturday.
