ATLANTIC CITY--While many municipalities are canceling fireworks shows this year, due to budget cuts, South Jersey residents and visitors are making final plans to celebrate the Fourth of July in this tough economy, with one of the biggest fireworks displays in the area.
Tony Capri, Chief Pyro-technician said, "This is a very large show, we held it and spread it out and try to make it a portrait throughout the whole sky and not one area." The 5700 pounds of explosives being used for the 21 minute show, sponsored by Borgata Hotel Casino and Harrah's, will run by computer with just a push of the button. "There's a lot of preparation in respect to getting the mortar the direction they'll be firing as well as safety considerations of the people that are going to be viewing them," said Captain Michael Ruley of the Atlantic City Fire Department. Many municipalities have canceled their fireworks festivities this year, but officials say in these times it's more important for Americans to celebrate their independence. Capri says, "I think the economic troubles has affected all businesses, people in Borgata and Harrah's have been good to us, they wanted for Atlantic City to put on a nice display." Officials say once the fireworks are over if anyone finds a non-fired shell to call police. "Whether it's here in Margate, Ventnor or wherever these show going to be held, you should not try to fire it off, open it up or burn gun powder..whcih is what it is," said Captain Ruley. He says if a shell is found to call 911 or your local Fire Department. Patrols will be looking out for motorists who travel to Pennsylvania or Delaware to purchase fireworks and bring them back into New Jersey. |
