ATLANTIC CITY-- This morning, the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority held a dedication ceremony for their 290,000 square foot solar power project. Jennifer Husko explains how they joined the state in taking the lead in going green.

Last June, under a 20-year power purchase agreement, the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority hired Pepco Energy Services in Arlington, Virginia to install a 2.37-megawatt rooftop solar power system that was placed atop the convention center.

"The Governor issued through his energy master plan a challenge to all of us in the public sector to take the lead in doing these kinds of energy efficient projects, make green initiatives a cornerstone of our economy in state as well as to save money," said Jeff Vasser, President of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority.

Just six months after construction began, they met the Governor's challenge, and the solar power system was complete.

Today they invited Governor Corzine to join them and other officials in celebrating the completion of this enormous project. "It's just an incredible reality of what is going on here in Atlantic City," said Corzine in this morning’s address.

Corzine believes the Authority's solar power project will help lead the way for the entire state in becoming energy efficient and said, "I'm thrilled that we have a major project that I think is a trailblazer for everyone else."

The rooftop solar power system is the largest in the country and with 13,486 solar panels, it's going to save the Authority a whole lot of money. "It's gonna generate $4.4 million dollars in savings for us, it cost no money to the tax payer to get this done, so it's a win-win for everyone," said Vasser.

The solar power project is just the beginning of ongoing green initiatives that the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority has up their sleeve.
