GALLOWAY TWP. - An early morning fire at an apartment complex in Galloway Township left a family of 6 without a home.

"We saw all this smoke and the fire, the orange flames and stuff coming from the bedroom, all the smoke was coming out of the house," said Danielle Tobias, a resident of an apartment across the hall from where the fire broke out.

The blaze broke out just before 3:30 Thursday morning at an apartment complex on the 200 block of Colonial Court..

"I was just mainly worried about the family across the hall from me cause they had 4 little children," said Tobias.

The fire started in one of the bedrooms of the apartment across the hall from Tobias.

"We found out there were 6 occupants, 4 children, and 2 adults," said Chief Ron Garbutt, with the Galloway Township Fire Department.

"That was my main concern because they have 4 little children," said Syed Bilgrami, who lives in the apartment below the one where the fire broke out. "Once I heard they were safe and everyone got out, that was the main important thing."

"Fire crews were able to put the fire out and contain it to the bedroom where the 2 children were sleeping," said Garbutt.

Firefighters were able to put the fire out before it spread to other units in the building, but the family living in the home where the fire started were displaced from their home.

"Most of the damage was done to the bottom bunks, they were pretty much destroyed along with a night stand that was next to it," said Garbutt. "The rest of the house had severe heat damage."

The displaced family is currently staying with relatives in the area according to authorities.

The cause of the fire was an overheated extension cord that was attached to a space heater according to Garbutt.
