HORSE DIVING COMING BACK TO ATLANTIC CITY

ATLANTIC CITY -- Steel Pier on the Atlantic City Boardwalk is set to bring back horse diving as a new attraction for summer 2012.

Many people here in South Jersey may remember when they were children coming to Atlantic City to see the famous horse diving, but it has been many years since we last saw a horse jump 40 feet with a woman on its back.

"It was here at the original Steel Pier since the 1920's and it was a very successful and popular act," said President of the Steel Pier Anthony Catanoso.

As part of a three year, 100 million dollar upgrade plan to the Steel Pier, officials here say they are trying to give tourists reasons to come back to Atlantic City, and they plan on doing that by bringing one of its most famous past attractions back to the boards.

"It was an exciting act. It was unique. There is not many places you could do that. Perform like that," said Atlantic City Historian Allen "Boo" Pergament.

The diving horse attraction came back briefly in 1993, but now that Steel Pier is independently operated, officials say the diving horse is back for good.

"I just have to say it was exciting to see. I can't put it into words," said visitor Beverley Wise.

Although many are excited for the new attraction, some, including several animal rights activists, have strong concerns and fear it will hurt the horses.

"I think it's disgusting. There is no need for this this day and age. It's cruelty and absolutely disgusting," said Atlantic County SPCA President Nancy Beall.

Officials at Steel Pier say this is not animal cruelty and the animals will not be harmed during training or during the shows.

"We know it's a safe act and we wouldn't do an animal act or diving horse act if we felt it endangered the animals or the riders, added Catanoso.

The diving horses are expected to arrive in Atlantic City for memorial day weekend.
