UNIQUE DONATION KICKS OFF CHRISTMAS AT CONGRESS HALL

CAPE MAY--hey say the holidays are all about getting into the spirit of giving, and Thursday, one Cape May county family went above and beyond that call. It's a unique donation they say they are honored to give.

With the buzz of a chain saw, the Borgia's Lower Township front yard was changed forever. "We're excited," said Annette Borgia, with a huge smile.

The 33-foot Douglas Fir that stood proudly there for nearly 30 years was cut down, and hoisted up, to be taken away to it's new home. "We're happy to do it," said Larry Borgia, "we'll replant the tree in that spot."

Weighing nearly 2,000 pounds, donating a Christmas tree like this is no small task, but something those at Congress Hall where eager to make happen. "One of our workers who works for the special projects team was going by their house and saw the tree and asked them if they'd be willing to donate it," explained John Daily, General Manager of Congress Hall.

"I kinda looked at him in surprise and said, are you serious?" said Larry about his reaction to the request.

Moving the tree from their North Cape May home to the front lawn of Congress Hall took some serious time and careful planning. "It's our second year doing it, so we get a little better, you know," said Daily. While it's half the size, it brings the same excitement at Congress Hall as the Rockefeller Christmas tree, a tradition that's gone on here in Cape May for years, although the tradition has been slightly altered. "It's our second tree lighting ceremony outside," explained Daily, "prior to this, it was indoors and so many people were coming, it was just almost impossible to facilitate it."

But the challenges of hoisting the large tree remain the same. Ultimately, a combination of manpower, machines, and some wires made it all possible. "It's beautiful," said Annette, taking pictures like a proud parent, "it really is a perfect tree, isn't it?"

"It looks spectacular," her husband agreed. The tree will be decorated as soon as the rain stops and will be lit up December 2nd, officially kicking off their Winter Wonderland. The festivities start at 6PM, and everyone's invited.

The tree lighting ceremony is open to everyone, not just guest of Congress Hall. Those attending are asked to bring an unwrapped gift to donate to Toys for Tots, or a non-perishable food item for the Cape May Food Closet.
