STREETSAFE DRIVING ACADEMY IN OCEAN CITY
(Return to Video Menu - View Full)
Ocean City- The StreetSafe driving academy, Ocean City Police Department, and Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation teamed up today at the Ocean City Library.
Together their effort was to educate teens and adults about the importance of driving safely and the dangers of distracted driving. Summer is the deadliest season for teen drivers and crowded shore towns with pedestrians make the driving environment even worse.
Joel Feldman and Dianne Anderson were there to tell the tragic story of their daughter Casey Feldman, who was killed just two summers ago in Ocean City by a distracted driver. They want people to understand how distracted driving can be a life or death scenario.
Joel Feldman said "We can't bring Casey Back, so what we decided to do is something that could save others lives".
Both Joel and Dianne talked about how "overwhelming" the support they received from the OCPD and StreetSafe was. StreetSafe brought a Subaru car along to the event, which is called "Drive Square". It is the most advanced and realistic driving simulator available today, allowing participants to drive in virtual reality by wearing computerized goggles. The simulator introduces distractions such as talking on the phone or texting. When these are introduced, the effects of distracted driving are immediately apparent.
"Our hope is that when other people see this, they will realize that this could happen to me. You could be Casey or the person that killed Casey. It is that important and it can happen to you and that is why we are here today because it happened to us."-Joel Feldman
StreetSafe, the OCPD, and the Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation will look to team up again in September for another event in Ocean City.
