SEA ISLE CITY - On Saturday, August 28, police officers created a D.W.I. check point along the 200 block of JFK Boulevard in Sea Isle City. The sobriety inspections were conducted by eighteen officers from the Sea Isle City Police Department and four Cape May County Sheriff's Department officers, who stopped every third vehicle in the west-bound lanes. The late-night effort, which took place from 11:00 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., was fully funded by a grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway and Traffic Safety as part of a state-wide initiative.

According to SICPD Detective Lieutenant Kirk Rohrer, who was one of the officers on duty, two drivers were arrested for operating a vehicle "under the influence." One warrant arrest was also made and 72 summonses were issued for traffic violations unrelated to drunk driving.

"The evening went very smoothly," said Rohrer. "We accomplished a great deal and the numbers we achieved were on-par with what we anticipated. During these operations, we look for all types of violations. It's a very good way to help keep the public safe."

In recent years, the Cape May County Sheriff's Department conducted similar check points along JFK Boulevard (a county roadway), which were also successful. Rohrer stated that the SICPD takes drunk-driving very seriously and would like to hold more check points in the future.

To contact the Sea Isle City Police Department or to report any unlawful activities, phone (609) 263-4311.
