ATLANTIC CITY -- Despite the previous weather concerns, "Thunder Over the Boardwalk" drew hundreds of thousands of spectators to Atlantic City to watch some of the best pilots from across the country and world.
"The sun has come out, we're ready to go. We're gonna have a great air show day. You can see the crowds are massive again. So, we're very fortunate based on yesterday's weather, to be where we're at today it's a good sign," said the president the Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce, Joe Kelly. The sunlight started peaking through the clouds early Wednesday morning, and although it set a beautiful scene for flying, plans for a parachuting demo by the Army Golden Knights had to be grounded due to high winds. "Safety is always going to be first at the show and this is one of those things where it was a safety issue and it's one performance of many that are gonna occur during the day. I understand all the flights and all the demos can take place," Kelly said. He couldn't have been more right, as more than 700,000 people were treated to 80 demo's and performances. COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE RIGHT, AS MORE THAN 700,000 PEOPLE WERE TREATED TO 80 DEMO'S AND DEMONSTRATIONS. C-17's, B-52's, prop planes, and jets were just a few of the sights and sounds visitors were treated to. "Well, the air show is the signature event for the summer season. It's a great way to bring 700,000 people mid-week into Atlantic City. The beauty of it is many of them are first time visitors," said the executive director of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Jeff Vasser. "And this is our third year coming over to the air show and we just enjoy it so much. We bring our seven grandchildren, and they just have a wonderful time. It's a wonderful experience," said Ocean City resident Marleen Kunz. While the air show can be seen throughout Atlantic City. For hundreds, the best seat is here on the beach." "It really couldn't get any better because you have the sand, the water, and the air show," one beachgoer said. For organizers, it's a chance to put Atlantic City, and our country, front and center. "I think what I appreciate the most is the patriotic nature of the event, and how there are a lot of families. So, there's a lot of that really good feeling that's going on today." Officials say attendance was around 700,000, slightly down from the 750,000 people last year. Overall, organizers say the day went smoothly, especially since temperatures were much more mild compared to the nearly 100 degrees last year. Planning for next year's event started almost immediately after the Thunderbirds finished up the show. |
